The concrete footings were poured on Tuesday. The plan shows 35 piers in total, most only 300mm deep, extending from the dense clay soil at the top to the sandy silty clay underneath. The soil test showed "M" class (moderately reactive) soil, with rock at 1.2m below the surface at the front right hand corner of the block.
I assume this impressive "X" at the front is to shore up the piers under the portico, which would otherwise be isolated from the slab.
